Polish artist

Poland has always produced fantastic artists, both visual and audio. I was fortunate enough to be taught printmaking by this experimental printer.

MAREK LACZYNSKI (Polish / 1925-)

Marek Laczynski was born in Warsaw. He was a partisan in WWII, while still in his teens. He left Poland after the Warsaw uprising in 1944, arriving in England with the Polish forces in 1946. He studied art at Borough Polytechnic and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. Marek Laczynski exhibited at the Grabowski Gallery, London, in 1960 and 1964. From 1964-1985 Marek Laczynski was Lecturer in Experimental Printmaking at Exeter College of Art and Design. Besides teaching at the college, Laczynski also published two books with the School of Printing’s private press imprint Bartholomew Books, The Wizard with his Pupil (1972), illustrated with original etchings, and Faces of Fear (1974), his own poems with reproduced etchings reminiscent of Fautrier’s Ôtages. Laczynski exhibited at Market Print Gallery, Exeter, in 1978. In 1981 he was one of ten artists who contributed prints to the Printmakers Council Portfolio, alongside Anthony Gross, Gertrude Hermes, John Piper and Julian Trevelyan. The British Museum has 9 woodcuts by Marek Laczynski in its permanent collection. Since 1985 Marek Laczynski has lived in Vienna.

Reflection - Tias in Lanzarote by 35mm_photographs

This image was taken using a Pentax P30, 35mm film camera, which uses manual focus lenses with the K-mount bayonet fitting. The lens used to take this photograph was a Rikenon 1:2 50mm, which was originally off a Richo KR-10 (super). At about 510 grams, the Pentax P30 (no. 3702885) is easy to carry and handle and has shutter speeds from 1/1000 of a second to 1 second. The automatic mode on this film camera chooses the best shutter speed and aperture setting to give the novice photographer a better chance of capturing a good image. It also has a semi-automatic mode as well, which chooses most of the settings but allows for more creativity. There is also a totally manual setting for the brave.

The film used was Fujicolor C200, a budget-priced film (expire date April 2014) processed by Jessops in Barnstaple. The negatives were scanned using an Ion Pics 2 SD.

Some financial advisers and institutions are encouraging clients to include art in their portfolios. Not only has this created a market for new artists but established, lesser known creators (that have been flying below the radar) are now beginning to ride on the crest of the wave. We read reviews, visit galleries, go shopping and are sometimes captured by cynical marketing.
